Bournemouth Groms charge to podium position at Schools Nationals
A four surfer squad came 3 rd out of 25 teams in the British School Teams Surfing Championships, held at Woolacombe, North Devon this weekend, held in challenging 4-5ft surf. The overall winners were Newquay, with last year's winners Braunton coming 2 nd with 36 points, closely followed by Bournemouth with 33 points.
“The team's overall result was due to all their efforts and support for each other. I was so proud of their attitude to their own performance and to the other competitors and teams.” –Andy Joyce, team manager and coach. Individual efforts of the 4 team members are worth mentioning as well:
Bournemouth Surfing Centre Team rider Miles Lee Hargreaves of Southbourne came 1st in the U14 division, posting an excellent ride in the final and consistently good performance up to that point.
Bournemouth Surfing Centre Team rider Nat McCabe from Brockenhurst, New Forest came 2 nd in the U18 Body board Final, narrowly missing the 1 st place by one point. Tom Weston also of Southbourne, surfed through 3 hard heats in the U16 to secure a semi-final place, unfortunately missed a second good wave, which stopped his progression to the final.
Bournemouth Surfing Centre Team Rider James Taylor of Highcliffe, came 1 st in his first U16 heat, but was unlucky with wave selection in his 2 nd heat.
Many of the team members will be individually competing in the English National Championship in Newquay and wish them all the best and success this upcoming Bank Holiday Weekend.
Finally a big thank you to all the friends and family that made the weekend a huge success, in addition the following sponsors for their help and support, Billabong, Custom Shoes, Calypso soft drinks and Hunter Surf for the event. Headworx, Alder and Surftech for assistance to the individual surfers and Bournemouth Surf School for the coaching and managing of the team.

Bill Booth memorial Comp a Huge success!
THE BILL BOOTH MEMORIAL EXPRESSION SESSION 12 th APRIL 2008
It's 10 years since the standout and larger than life surfer, Bill Booth died, but his memory lives on………… Bill had surfed the world, but always remembered his roots, making Highcliffe his surf retreat and you will find Bill's bench perfectly placed (for a rest or to enjoy the view) on your way up from the surf, displaying a plaque of his mantra “Surfed it. Loved it. , Respected it”
Highcliffe can throw up worthy surf and is always a good workout as you paddle the rip to hold the take off slot. This was certainly the case during Bill's Memorial comp held on Saturday 12 th April, when around 50 or so friends and family of Bill & Pat Booth were greeted by contestable surf with a brisk south westerly wind pushing up the swell and rip! Many people commented on the ‘good to be alive' vibe all around the car park and comp area.
Longboarders were in first on a pushing tide and a growing swell. The natural footers took full advantage of the right-handers peeling from the breakwater. With a six man final, there was plenty of action, featuring a close battle between the in- form Brian Page, who surfed the full width of the comp area on a screaming right-hander, only to be pushed out of 1 st place by 2007 British Masters champion, Adrian Howell, also with a long ride featuring his trade mark hang five.
The Shortboard section was just as intense with almost a dead heat for 1 st place. The six surfers all jostling in the tight take off zone saw the lead swing between four key contenders. Earlier heat winner & local surfer, Simon Eaton, was enjoying the conditions on his retro fish, but never really got the high scoring waves this time. It was down to the wire stuff with Brad Rochfort, another heat winner and fish rider from the earlier rounds also failing to select the best of the set waves.
On my judge's sheet – I had the following surfers tied equal 1 st : Highcliffe local hero, Alex “Zippy” Josey, riding the latest S Core Doc Lausch board, versus local legend, Guy Penwarden, opting to ride a pure retro diamond tail single fin board. Both surfers sought out the best set waves and maximised their time right in the most critical part of the wave. Guy was the eventual winner of the Bill Booth Memorial Shield well deserved considering the conditions and his board selection – his single fin approach dedicated to Bill's riding preference.
With the hot local juniors all away at the British pro junior comp in North Devon, the door was left open for Charlie Banks and Laurence Taylor to battle it out – with Charlie just taking the win. Competitors' donations went to Surfers Against Sewage
Enjoy every minute of your surf life……………………..Eric Davies

7/05/2007 - UPDATED Kimmeridge Rules, please read !
For many years local surfers have had an excellent working relationship with the army concerning Surfing whilst gunnery practice is taking place around Kimmeridge. Recently there have been a number of incidents which may have put this arrangement in jeopardy.
IF you want to continue to surf Broad Bench with the Armys' permission the following rules apply :
1. Walk round the beach only as far as the first sign. If there is no red flag flying above the sign, you can proceed as far as the second sign.
2. Under NO circumstances should you climb the
Oil Well range safety gates to gain access to the Bench.
You must either swim from the beach or walk round the beach.
3. Use the FREEPHONE information number -
08000 856628 BEFORE YOU LEAVE to confirm whether the ranges are in use or not. The ranges are cleared of ammunition on friday afternoons, which means the bench should be rideable on weekends, apart from the following:
12/13 May
6/7 October
17/18 November
During the week, access to the bench is only by sea - you must paddle out !
There will be a notice board going up shortly explaining all this and more, please read it !
If you see anyone else climbing the gate or trying to surf when the red flag is flying - STOP THEM !
Remember that if you do not use the bench responsibly, you will not be able to use it at all !
06/12/2005 Clark Foam closes factory in US In an amazing move last week Clark Foam shut their factory in Laguna Niguel, California, according to a seven page fax "For Good".
Making up to 1000 blanks a day, Clark accounted for approximately 80% ofthe worlds production of surfboard blanks.
Although the other 20% are mainly made in Australia, demand for these will be huge and everyone in the surfing industry expects prices of surfboards to go through
the roof in the next few months, as shapers try desparately to find new suppliers. Click here for Surfer Magazines reports
